PSHE
PSHE education is a school curriculum subject in England that helps children and young people stay healthy, safe and prepared for life and work in modern Britain.
Our aim is to educate our pupils in all areas of PSHE to ensure their wellbeing whilst with us at Bedford Free School and throughout their lives. A virtuous cycle can be achieved, whereby pupils with better health and well-being can achieve better academically, which in turn leads to greater success.
Our pupils will learn how to build and maintain successful relationships, how to navigate the internet and social media safely, how to keep mentally and physically healthy and adapt to their changing bodies.
KS3 and KS4 Overview
PSHE will be taught during allocated lesson time, assemblies, external agencies, prep sessions and the science curriculum. These will be developed from years 7 – 11, whilst ensuring the content is age appropriate.
Each month there is a PSHE lesson for each of the following topics:
- Families
- Respectful relationships
- Online and media
- Being safe and the law
- Mental wellbeing
- Internet safety and harms
- Physical health and fitness
- Healthy eating
- Drugs, alcohol and tobacco
- Basic first aid
- Changing adolescent body
- Intimate and sexual relationships
Advice For Parents
One the of the best things parents can do to support their children in PSHE lessons, is to ask them about discussions we have been having in class, and to encourage debate and discussion about topics that have been taught, at home.
All pupils are given a PSHE journal to reflect on each session delivered. These are kept in their tutor bases for their reference at any time. They have also been given a useful contacts sheet that is in their planners for help and guidance on various issues.
Talking to your children about their day and asking if they have any concerns, is the best way to highlight any potential problems they may be having and address these. There are many resources for parents on the internet that can help. If you would like further information on these please contact:
